- We were just out for a gentle walk amongst the kind olive orchards of the southeastern Levant. Rows of calm swaying trees waving up and down along the hills before the far- distant mountains, lightly shading the paths between them along which we strolled. Beside us, a glimmer of light caught our eye—a great diamond, perfectly cut, growing out of a knot in the tree at eye level. We weren’t sure we were seeing it correctly, and yet. Where did it come from? How many centuries ago did someone drop it in this ancient orchard so that it would grow amongst the trees as it did? Did they know it was missing? We tried for hours to pry it free, but it was one with the world. Such a beautiful tree, we wouldn’t fell it just for our purposes, so we cut the smallest sliver of its trunk, and let it be.
