That part of the Kauri tree which catches the eye, its massive and broad trunk, is not that which is most worthy of preservation. The trunk is mighty, sure, but the true beauty, its true purpose, is in its delicate canopy, spreading out from the great mass of its trunk into fine branches, twigs, and leaves that curl over one another to make a gentle bed. In this bed, a world all its own, invisible and untouched by the spectators on the ground. Where birds next, and little critters make their homes for generations, never needing to visit the hard and rocky ground. A topography of its own making, filled with intricacies unimagined by those of us whose feet bind us to the earth.
