We were lost in the murky brown oxbows of the Mekong River in Laos. The steep jungle mountains obscured our view of the rivers ahead, and in the fading light, it seemed foolish to try and navigate, but the steep banks of thick underbrush held unknown dangers. Just around the bend, we saw a beautiful monkeypod tree, low in height, but a broad canopy of twisting branches and leaves and roots. We moored ourselves to one of the roots and nestled ourselves at the base of its trunk, lifted just above the swamp, and were cradled there, safe and comfortable until, in the light of the day, we found our way home.
