We were wandering through the forests of central Germany, as the spring morning sunlight filtered through the trees and illuminated the thin layer of fog rising up from the sweet-smelling duff. Just southeast of Berlin, we trailed along a thin creek that we knew would eventually lead to the River Spree, when we stopped to forage for lunch at a walnut tree overhanging the flow. At the tree’s base, resting in the soft silt under an inch of water in the crystalline stream, was a single diamond, blue, shining, faceted flawlessly, peering out amongst the black-brown forest and waving.
