This is the kind of ring that pairs well with a neat scotch. You find it on the man in the speakeasy on the second floor of a hotel in downtown San Francisco. The only door in is in an alleyway underneath some scaffolding, where there’s a single unmarked black metal door. You open it, ascend the narrow brick and cement staircase, at the top of which is another door, ajar, just enough to let the sounds of smooth jazz and the smell of top-shelf liquor seep in with the yellow lamplight. You know you’ll find him here, in the corner, nursing his glass and reading from a first-run print of Joyce, and you’ll catch his eye.
